I am considering upgrading the wheels on my Spec Roubaix Elite, which is currently fitted with the Shimano WHR 500 rims.

The wheels I am looking at are the Mavic Kysrium Elites. Will I find them a big improvement and if so what would be the main benefits?

I have no particular reason for doing it, just want to treat myself!

It is said that upgrading wheels is the best upgrade but I never really noticed a massive difference. You still have to be fit enough to pedal them but maybe at the marginal level it matters. I guess it makes a bigger difference from poor to good but not so much from good to slightly better.

Everyone has a different opinion as to what constitutes better too. Do it anyway if it makes you feel good (it does!) and it makes the bike look better too!

I run ksyrium elites on my winter bike. Had them for about 3 years no problems whatsoever, still run sweet as a nut. Pretty much bomb proof in my experience.

Would have no problems recommending them.

I think (having not ridden the Shimano offering) that the Elites will transmit power that bit better - through lightness and stiffness.

Personally I would save up that bit extra for some SL's which ticks the box for having tried the best wheels for recreational activities and saves you wondering whether there is anything else out there that is better.

They are certainly strong and light. The lightness is apparent in two ways: in acceleration, there's reduced inertia because of reduced weight at the wheel rim; and of course any reduction in overall weight of a bike makes climbing hills that bit easier.

I can only speak from experience they are an excellent wheel mine are still going strong from when I bought em new in 2006 not sure if I could justify them on a winter hack though but the mavic aksiums their alloy as opposed to aluminium equivelent are equally good for that and half the price
