Hi I am looking to decide b/w Marlin 5 Gen 2 vs trail 5 mountain bike for my first bike.

How will you be using it? On the road and over what sort of terrain? For fun or for commuting as well?
It's always a good idea to help us out to provide a link to the exact bikes you are talking about so there's no confusion.
Both are entry level bikes and are pretty similar apart from mainly the gears. The Altus eight speed double chainring set up on the Trek is not as good as the Acera triple chainring and nine speed on the Cannondale and won't give you the range of gears.
The Cannondale has smoothed frame welds while the Trek has lumpy birds poo type which may or may not bother you. Although the Trek has a lifetime frame warranty. Cannondale has three years.
Rubberware is good on both and both have hydraulic discs.
Apart from price consideration the Cannondale would appear to be the better buy. Neither have the now fashionable 1x chainset gears or clutch type rear derailleur.
Might be worth a look at the Decathlon Rockrider for about the same price which has a 10 speed 1x.
