For those who don't know about this, the 22 year-old Safi rider Marina Romoli was involved in a terrible crash with a car while training with her fiancé and another rider a couple of days ago and suffered deep lacerations to her face and injuries to her vertebrae. The doctors yesterday morning performed nine-hour surgery rebuilding her face requiring 500 stitches and got her into a condition where they no longer feared for her life. Now Cycling Quotient says that she will need to undergo spinal surgery, and they say that it is possible she could be in a wheelchair for the rest of her life.
It seems the collision happened when the driver was turning on to the road Romoli was riding on, although the details aren't 100% clear to me yet.
Hopefully things work out for the best for her but it's a sobering reminder of the dangers that cyclists face not just racing but training.
