As you may, or probably may not, know I haven't really done too much cycling since I was a child. Apart from an 80 mile day in 2009 (Day 1 of a C2C trip) I haven't really done a serious bike ride since my teenage years until I bought myself a hybrid bike a couple of months back.
I'm pleased to say I've been out on it pretty regulary and have been 'bitten by the cycling bug' so to speak. I get annoyed when more than a couple of days pass and I haven't been out on my bike.
Anyway, i live on the outskirts of Scarborough and less than a mile from my home is some beautiful, hilly, countryside. I have found a great 10 mile loop which includes, plenty of flat riding mixed with a couple of small climbs and one steep climb, by my standards at least (about 350ft in under a mile). This Friday just gone I managed to complete this in 55 minutes - going an average of 10mph+ for the first time on this route.
I know to some that isn't massively impressive but I feel an enormous sense of achievement having broken that average speed on that particular route. The first time I went on this route it it took me 1hr and 17mins with lots of rests. I can already see my stamina improving as well as my determination not to stop and go longer.
Now my plan is to add longer distances to my riding and more hills. I really want to become competent at hill climbing. For me that is one of my main cycling goals before I go on a tour of Scotland next year where hill climbing is going to be common!!!
But so far, so good!
