I had trouble getting the wireless on my cheap and cheerful acer laptop working. It was beyond my linux knowledge and involved using an alternative to mad wifi and finding drivers elsewhere. Fortunately I work with some helpful open source enthusiasts who sorted it out for me, and tweaked a few other bits too.
