Hi CCN

I have been looking to upgrade my stock Shimano 505 Clip less pedals on my racer "I will look to put these on my Hybrid"

I have SPD mtb shoes and I want to stick with these.

I have rattled my search down to two choices

Shimano M540 Clipless SPD

£31.49 or

Shimano XTR Race M980
£99.99

What would you recommend I use my bike to commute to work and to do the odd 80 mile run once a month or so when rugby session is not on

I would recommend the M540s, 'cause they're cheaper.

I use M520s and they've seen me through some fair distances. I'm looking to upgrade to road pedals now, though.

M770 - XT's bomb proof and if you do some digging around, you should be able to get them for under 350. RRP £70-80.

Use these myself for every day commuting in all weather. Dead easy to re-grease and run perfectly smooth.

PS - Front QR is on wrong side and you shouldn't use those neoprene chain guards on a road bike - it's just soo wrong. Oh and your saddle should be level.

Quite happy on those out to 140 miles and no sign of foot problems, so I see no reason to upgrade.

Save your pennies towards a new chain if you are going to run big ring/biggest sprocket like that.

Thanks for the help

QR is an easy change.

I like the chain guard because my frame was getting knocked like crazy by the chain.

I did ride my bike with a level saddle for about 400 miles and I find it better to have it sloping down its more comfortable for me.

Ps. I have ordered the M540 should be a nice little upgrade and i'll put the M505 on my Bad Boy

I'm with Pete here.

The M520s and the more expensive ones are identical in performance. The others are slightly lighter. Unless you're a weght weenie save your pennies.
