The usual commute today, but one of the spd bolts had come loose so the cleat was spinning around the remaining bolt. I had to take the pedal off and unscrew the bolt holding the tension springs in order to get my shoe off.

I've spent the last hour trying to shimmy the springs back into place, except I can't get both springs in place without having the long bolt pushed out of alignment.

This is really getting on my nerves now.

I'm no surgeon...am I going about it in an obtuse way? Is there a knack to reassembling the springs?

Ah, you probably should have just prised the springs back with a flat nose screw driver to remove cleat.

Only option might be to prise open the springs and see if you can get the screw back in straight.

I can see more than a pair of hands being needed - got a vice ?

Well I drink far more than is good for me but I don't see how that would help.
I've admitted defeat. I only have a multitool and some tweezers to hand at the moment. I looked in at the LBS but the guys just shook their heads at me. Oh well, I'll go down the flat nose screwdriver route in future. On the plus side the other pedal will make an excellent bottle opener.

Thanks fossy.

Gaaaaah!

Never remove the bolt!

It's like never crossing the streams in Ghost Busters!

The bolt goes in at the factory and is put in place by an assembly line machine tool that holds the spring under tension, you have got naff all hope of getting the bolt back in again by hand.

New pedals I am afraid.

All right, important safety tip. Thanks Egon. Lesson learned.
I opted to play with Evans. They too have it online for 20 beer tokens but in store for 30. Having the patience of a two year old I got both and I'll refund a set once Royal Mail splutters back into life after the long weekend.

Thanks for the advice all!

As already said - never remove that bolt! It's come up on CC before and I'm sure a solution was never found.

Lever the spring back next time with a screwdriver or even an allen key.

£20 mistake; so could be worse. Especially considering that if you buy cleats they cost £15 so pedals and cleats for £20 is a bargain.
