The old addage in cycling is to wear many thin layers, not one thick layer.

This means I wear a baselayer ( M&S thermal longsleeve ), T shirt, Altura full zip long sleeve and a Flouro race cape.

I check the weather forecast and leave the T shirt, M&S thermal or both when the temp warms up.

On 8th January 2009, I wore a short sleeve road jersey and shorts.
I was in San Francisco
On 21st January 2009, I wore three layers.
I was in Warwickshire

On a ride last February. The Snowdrop Express 100km Audax Pop, I started with four layers, and at half distance, took off the T and stuffed it under the saddle with an elastic band. At 3/4 distance, the M&S thermal came off and that went in a back pocket.
If I was wearing a Coat like the one you are looking at, I would not have been able to stow it on the bike or in a back pocket.

Discuss.

I get that. I want something for commuting, which I can wear as a regular jacket when I arrive, or something to stick on for the regular 1-3 mile trips I do around and about, which will do the trick, and be fairly reflective.

I bought a great decathlon one in the sales, but returned it as the front zip seemed not to be windproof at the top. It did confirm though that it would work for me as a shorter distance jacket, over just a top etc.

At the moment I'm using my very nice walking jacket, but with the hood attached it doesn't work so well, and I don't want to trash it cycling!

Cheers
Steve

I don't have one but thought it looked a little pricey for the spec. It has pit zips which makes me think it's not a breathable fabric, despite its '30% more breathable' claim. 30% of nothing is still nothing! But it is well featured, i.e pockets, storm flap, zips, cuffs etc. And I have no doubt it will be waterproof and robust - Lusso do generally make tough and well thought out stuff.

I did like this, from the lusso website....

NOTE: Some images may not be 100% accurate, some are shown for illustration purposes only.

My concern about that jacket is breathability - but it is a hobby horse of mine. I hate getting sweaty inside a waterproof. I think you can get something better for that price. Anything going in a local Evans sale?

OK, but think about how the jacket will smell after a commute ride.

At 8 kcals / min, over a 30 minute commute, 60 cc of water leaves your body. 30 cc, or approx 1 fl oz will be under or in the jacket. It will contain salts, hormones and other stinky stuff.

Thanks Yello, I have a big thing about breath-ability as well, which is why I haven't bought the jacket yet. I'd love to get an event jacket etc, but Soooo much money.

I think I'll have another good look around.

I'm tempted to get a good windproof, but I have a couple of windproof bits, and on days like this evening, when my shower proof jacket and windproof gillet got soaked through, A good waterproof jacket, sounds good.

Jimbo - A jacket full of hormones?

It might be one of those instances where you decide priorities and compromise; i.e. get a decent, light weight waterproof and accept that you'll stay dry but get hot & sweaty on some occasions OR forego one completely and accept you'll get drenched periodically. The breathable waterproof jacket is somewhat of a holey grail! eVent is, I believe, as good as it gets at the moment.

Though, that said, Paramo do some good jackets; a good balance of both without being masters of either. They are a bit bulky for cycling, imo, and not cheap but they are quality gear.

Yup, hormones come out in a bloke's sweat.

It is supposed to attact a female by demonstrating the individual is fit, healthy and a good choice for continuing the species.

The healthier the man, the more attractive the aroma

Maybe not a bad thing
