Went out for a ride today with a fellow ccer this morning and after only twenty miles or so on regular terrain, leg muscles started to get really sore and was a struggle. I had to drop down to low front cog even on the level / downhill portions as legs were aching. Weather was pretty cold, about 1 to 2 degrees and was kitted out with the required thermals ( excluding the overshoes). I did put on new pedals, but these seemed to be set ok and no discomfort on knees or ankles.

Any ideas or tips?

Cheers

Did you ride or do exercise any time leading up to this excursion?

If it's not fatigue then it could be a sign of the bonk kicking in. Try looking into your nutrition and eating slower releasing carbs like porridge an hour before heading out. Soreen is a nice nibble and the new banana flavour is perfect for cycling food.

Maybe you were riding just slightly quicker than normal keeping up with your buddy.

I had a similar experience riding with a fellow cc er all went well until the first big hill when I suffered savage cramps in both legs.

I rode the same hill on my own a few weeks later and didnt have any problems.

Cheers for the replies. Spoke to my old dutch who was a crazy marathon runner and like your opinions, reckons it is down to energy as I never felt fatigued and infact, never got out of breath at all. It all happened around an hour after I set off which she said coincides with your body looking for alternative energy after it's used the initial source. I did have porridge and bacon roll before I headed out, but I had a few beers during the saturday so that all makes sense now. My old dear told me that what I get for thinking I was superman!

I'll be taking some off the diluted energy stuff in my water bottle, soreen and nuts and raisens next time!
