Hi all, my first post here. I've had a search and can't find any clues to my problem, so here goes...

I have a set of Mavic 717 rims on my newly restored 90's Kona. Problem is, the rear wheel developed a rattle. On a complete strip down and inspection of the wheel, I tracked it down to a small piece of metal 'inside' the rim. I've been told that it's used to hold the rim together when it's made and doesn't effect the strength of the rim. However the noise is driving me nuts. Has anyone had a similar experience? Can I remove this annoying piece of metal or fix it down so it doesn't rattle?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Haven't come across it but drilling a needle hole and using a bit of superglue could cure it.

If it's one of the connecting pins rattling about you're in trouble. It being a physical impossibility and all.

It's undoubtedly either a piece of swarf from the manufacturing process or an escaped nipple from the building process and the only way out is through the valve hole. Shake the wheel about till it falls out.

Yep it's a big bit, from the manufacturing process. Not part of a spoke.

I've tried shaking it, grabbing it with pliers etc..but can't get any grip on it.

I think I'm stumped as it's the opposite side to the valve hole! So I would need to remove half the spokes to get it round to the other side!

It sounds ridiculous at slow speeds...

Bah...after spending a weekend riding in the Peak District I like to take it easy on my Monday morning commutes.

I have a small piece of swarf inside my back wheel (Campag Zonda's) I only notice it with the wheel off the bike, it'll never come out as the wheels have a solid upper bridge construction, and I cannot get it out of the valve hole...Oh well.

yep iv'e had this exact problem. its a wodge of plastic near the join on the wheel. I dribbled a blob of superglue into the rim near the floating irritant and then shook the wheel till it caught the glue, then let it set. no more noise.

I did strip my whole bike down twice till i found the noise though
