I'm looking for a new road bike for commuting. Ideally 3x8, ali frame and downtube shifters. Has anyone seen anything like this recently? Advice please. Thanks.

New? With downtube shifters?

Have you been in the Amazon for the last fifteen years?

Thank you for the link Smokeysmoo, however I'm looking for the, now unfashionable, 3x8 gear arrangement. Combining that with down tube shifters and I think I may be out of luck!

My preference for down tube shifters is based on experience with combined units (brifters as Sheldon would have said.)

You must have had a bad experience because probably 99.9% of cyclists are getting on fine with combined shifters!

I have had about 5 different bikes in the past few years all with these modern newfangled all in one gear thingies and done in excess of 30,000km and never had the tiniest problem.

For you to be this particular is fine, but I suspect that the only bikes with that set up as new will be low-end, so a poor frame, and components to match. You will be better getting an quality frame and components second hand and having it all built up or doing it yourself.

Good luck

Yeah, your probably right. I've done a lot of miles commuting and winter road conditions wear out brifters quite quickly in my experience. The cost of new ones is what prompted my enquiry re down tube shifters. I might go shopping at Decathlon again, this looks OK : http://www.decathlon.co.uk/triban-3-id_8167038.html

Still...

Here you go,

http://www.evanscycl...d-bike-ec026049

£1,495 with the down tube shifters you require. 531 Steel tubes not Ali. and only 16 gears so doesnt quite hit the mark, but looks like a fantastic bike in the retro style.

Money well spent!
Haha, that does look fantastic, I love the look of old steel bikes. There's somebody riding around the roads of Leeds on an old Colnago - it oozes class but if it were mine I'd keep it in my living room and ride around on something more mundane.

Well, I've ordered the Decathlon thing. I'll review the options when the brifters wear out. I now see there are third party units available, challenging the Shimano monopoly. Also I see people using Campagnolo units and a converter. We'll see.
