I have just got a new mountain bike (new to me, not actually new) and I need a decent lock, which I can wrap around the seat post when it isn't being used.

Which lock would folk recommend please ?

I use a D lock on my road bike, but that has a bracket on the down tube, making storage easy.

thank you !

The majority of modern D-Locks come with a similar bracket to the one you have on your road bike, so you can mount it to the bike of your choice, in this case the mountain bike.

Any cable lock flexible enough to wrap around the seatpost will also be thin enough to be cut through with a pair of garden shears! You could go the armour plated cable lock route, however you loose some of the flexibility and may find it difficult to wrap it around the seat post tight enough to stop it rattling.

I'd advise getting a D lock. Kyrptonite and Abus are good names - I believe the guideline is spend 20% of the value of your bike on your lock, however it is very easy to spend more for extra protection.

The Kryptonite New-York range is a well regarded range of chain and D-Locks, as well as Abus.
