Hi all, new member here who has been lurking for a while trying to gleen some information on new bikes.

I have read a few very useful threads on the Spesh Tricross and am really tempted to part with more money than I had intended to replace my Ridgeback Comet. I have gone as far as going to see one today and have arranged a test ride for Thursday.

What I am worried about is that it might just be too much bike for my needs. I live in a place that is not ideal for cycling (Largs, Ayrshire), unless I go a few stops on the train. The main roads in all directions are far too busy with heavy traffic and IMHO a danger to cyclists. Heading south from here is not too bad... Also, the weather is not great!!

For years I have been a, well, casual cyclist.... only an occassional ride out. Having said that I do sometimes get carried away (by my standards!) and do 50 odd miles at a time. Suppose that's not bad for a 47 year old on a Comet....

To justify shelling out for a Tricross I am going to have to get a whole lot of use out of it, and I know that is not something that can be answered by anyone on here, I am just going to have to use the bike more!! It is by all accounts a great bike (and braking issues seem to be sorted...2010 model has an uphanger fitted) and I do think I would get use out of it on sustrans routes, canal paths etc as well as road use.

From a health point of view as well, I feel I need to do something especially after an article in yesterdays paper about cycling being so good for combatting heart disease. With my family history, that is certainly an issue to consider.

So please help to convince me that this will be worth the money! The only other bike that ticked most of the right boxes was a Trek 7300, or even a Ridgeback Momentum (cheaper but not available until January).

Anyone know of any bike clubs around here? That would be an incentive to get out and use it more.

i can understand your concerns with the road - the road north of largs is narrow and the cars on it travel pretty fast so its not particularly enjoyable to cycle for parts. which would be a bit annoying as its a road with some great views so would otherwise be a great ride!

i think there are plans to eventually link up largs with the sustrans route that currently ends in gourock. not sure what the timescale is on that though

as for bike clubs there is inverclyde velo. don't know where they are based though, i've just seen a few guys out with their jerseys on.

bikewise...im no expert so cant offer any advice with that but i recently got a new bike and figured i'd rather get the bike that took my fancy even if it cost a bit more (within reason of course) so i wouldnt be thinking "what if" everytime i took my 2nd choice out.

I'm a big fan. I've been commuting, and making longer rides, on my Tricross Comp for about 3.5 years. I'm 10 years older than you and find it nippy and comfortable. It's good on roads, but excellent on the canal paths and sustrans trails you mentioned - I took mine for it's first days out on sustrans routes in the highlands. I've changed to narrower tyres for road commuting and have mudguards for the winter; the wheels spin wonderfully and can take hammer. Try a hill or two on your test ride, that should convince you.

If the Tricross was 2kg lighter then its hill climbing ability would be star class... as it is is a reliable, trusty middle of the roader that is just about vfm with the Spesh price increases.
Frame is unburstable.. but it should be .. being made of the heavier grade alloy.
I have made a few after market changes over time to get it to be more responsive on the road and I am happy to ride on it in more 'aloof' company.. it does not disgrace itself.
My issue is, as a xrosser.. it is outclassed.. no two ways about it.

I am another fan. Have a Tricross Sport 09. Changed the tyres to Bonty 700x28c hardcase, slightly less comfort but way more speed than the CX tyres provided by Spech; Brooks B17 Pro because I found the Spech saddle not right for my backside. Use it for general riding, done a couple of 100 KM Audax and I have no complaints.

Good all round bike for the more stately amonst us.

Just got one a few months ago for my daily commute in Glasgow. It's a great bike and I really don't think you'll regret it.
