I've been cycling for a couple of months now and decided I should get pedals cleats etc but I've ordered them online and since doing research on them I'm worried I could do damage to my joints I broken my right knee ankle tibia and tibia 8 years ago and don't want to aggravate these old war wounds what should I do guys

I would try to talk to the doctor that put you back together. I had the same concern about knee problems that resulted in surgery for me back in the late 70s. I did not consult my surgeon, I don't even know if he is retired by now. I was very careful with my set up, did not overdo it at first and read everything I could find that I thought would be relevant. It sounds like your injury is much more recent and was more serious than mine. Very difficult for anyone that is not a medical professional with access to your x rays and medical records to advise you. I will say that if I felt pain I would stop or change set up very quickly. Good luck with your decision.

Is there a set up which is possibly less harsh or is it all just trial and error I'm really worried now lol and are these cleats really worth the risk do I get a real advantage from them

I had knee surgery last year for a torn miniscus, and i find using cleats is better than normal pedals. My knee/foot are kept straight and in line, where as on flat pedals my feet move all over the place
I also have look keo's.

I had been pinned and plated for years, they have been removed now.I have no problem at all with cleats.Once set up properly your joints will allways be in the right place due to the nature of being clipped in.
My cleats have a few degrees of float.
Everyone however is different,i set mine up myself and after a few small adjustments all was well.
A bike fit however is a good idea.

if theyre fitted correctly the cleats will keep your legs moving in the correct plane and will therefore help your knees rather than damage them
