Long Reach Brakes for MTB

My dad has been given an MTB with disc brakes. I took a look at them last night and they're all but buggered. Which standard brakes are the best brakes to replace these? There is a hole in the fork for a bolt but the distance from the hole to the rim is around 90mm. Any suggestions?

TIA

You generally don't put caliper brakes on a mtb, especially one that has discs already so fairly modern. Assuming the discs are cable activated even if you can find calipers that fit the levers will pull too much cable for caliper brakes to be effective and stopping power will be poor.

If you don't see provision for two bosses on the forks/frame per pic below then you have forks that are disc specific. If there are bosses V brakes would be effective replacement. If not Avid bb7 disc calipers (mtb version) are probably your best bet as direct replacement.

What sort of bike is it, and what sort of fork?

Any of the Shimano Hydraulic disc brakes out there would fit the bill, from M395 up to Deore M615.... You'll find most of them for well under a ton not including rotors, and often cheaper than cable discs, more powerful and easier to maintain.

Rosebikes, a pair of M395 for about £50 delivered.

Or Deore M615 from Merlin for 70 delivered.

I wanted a cheap fix. The bike in question is for my dad. He's 73 years old and only really tootles around once in a blue moon on his bike. He has been known to ride to Kidderminster and back a few times, though (about a 50 mile round trip).

Ok then, if I knew what the current brakes are, what they fit on and what doesn't work we can approach it from the other end. It may be possible to get them back up and running again.

Thanks, @Cubist.

The problem is that my dad won't spend much on a bike. As I mentioned further up this thread, he's 73 now and probably only uses his bike once a fortnight-month, if that. I'm going to have another tinker with the brakes at the weekend, probably get some new pads. Failing that, maybe I'll treat him to some new brakes for Xmas?

The brakes in question are (I believe) Clarks CMD 5 (photo below). I found them by doing a Google search and eliminating anything that didn't resemble them.

Thanks for your input
