Help please !

I've volunteered for the London Triathlon(cycle only) for the 40km ride. Due to family commitments I can only ride on a Saturday or Sunday properly but could do turbo sessions or spin during the week.

I haven't ridden properly since 1988 when indexed gears and look pedals were new technology !

Should I join a club and go out on a few club runs to get fit again ?

Can you not get up an hour before the family do? I know of a few guys who are on the road by 5am.

I can on the weekends unfortunately I'm on a 6:30am or earlier train to London all week and don't get back until 7.30pm. Would be nice to ride during the week but cannot.

So you are out of the house for 13 hours+ a day. No time for exercise? That's bad, and you should try to do something about it, triathlon or not. I'd suggest getting a Brompton, and maybe cycling the first station or two, or getting off early on the way home. If you are anywhere near Regent's park, you could do a lap or two at lunch time. If a brompton is not an option but there is secure parking at work, then you could look up a bike there and take it out at lunch time. Lunchtime spin classes are another option.

I assume if you are commuting from Brighton to London, it's an office job. Many have excellent shower facilities, and lots of people go for lunchtime runs. Check out your building if it has facilities.

Agree with @jefmcg - I've gone through phases of working stupid hours with no time for myself and it's unsustainable and unhealthy.

When I had a long commute (3 hour round trip), I used to make a point of getting out for a jog at lunchtime. you can run, shower, grab lunch and be back at the desk within an hour. Book it in your calendar as a meeting (mark private if you need to) and only move it in critical circumstances!
