ABOUT THE RIDE
Take on 70 miles from city to coast for HOPEHIV. Join 100 cyclists as you ride from Wimbledon Common in London to the Langstone Hotel on Hayling Island in Portsmouth.

This challenging but beautiful route takes cyclists out of London onto Esher, Cobham and then Guildford. It continues on to Haslemere and Buriton, before passing through Rowland’s Castle and Havant, and then finally heading over the bridge to Hayling Island for a well-deserved celebratory finish!

WHERE THE MONEY GOES
Fundraising Target: Fund 3 bicycles

Bicycles are vital to our projects and we need more! This year, every single penny raised from the London to Hayling Island Bike Ride will be used to buy bicycles for our care workers, child mentors and human rights ambassadors in sub-Saharan Africa, who are the ‘heartbeat’ of our programmes in the seven countries we work in. In areas where public transport is scarce, bikes enable our dedicated community volunteers to reach many more vulnerable children and young people.

ABOUT HOPEHIV
HOPEHIV supports kids who have been given the toughest of tough starts. In communities ground down by poverty and AIDS, a generation of children and young people are growing up without parents to nurture and protect them. Yet many show extraordinary spirit, resilience and talent. HOPEHIV are determined to provide them with the opportunity to fulfil their own potential and build a future for themselves and their communities.

HOPEHIV work in partnership with local African project partners, helping to nurture, educate, protect and empower orphaned and vulnerable children; those living on the streets, in rural and remote areas, in urban slums, girls and young women, and child headed households. Our projects cover four key areas:
  • Emotional and social support - including psycho-social support, rehabilitation of street children, guardian support and non-residential care.
  • Education - includes free community schools, peer education and educational supplies.
  • Economic empowerment - equipping older orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) with the skills and tools to become economically self-sufficient. Includes vocational, life and business/entrepreneurship skills training, tools/inputs and microcredit loans.
  • Children’s rights - empowering OVC to understand and advocate for their rights and equipping older OVC to participate in decision making processes.
In 2014 we are proud to be working with 19 local project partners, in 219 communities, reaching over 50,000 vulnerable children and young people each year. The countries which we work in are; Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Uganda and South Africa.
