I went to watch this crit and supporting races in 2008 and it was a great evening of racing. I really really enjoyed it.

Should I put on my sword, red tunic with epaulettes, and those damn shiny boots that I don't want the plebs to step upon and turn up so that you can kiss my hand, (or better stil, her maj.) Tim, or shall I stay here, in front of the PC?

Big Rides. Rimas and Charlotte! Well done both. For the last race, the speed of the Elite bunch was a tad off putting, nay frightening. Bloody young upstarts!

A nice evening in good company - thanks all. Oh - and the guy who did the record skid... he can't be a regular commuter / dude about town, eh?

He very much is... and was in fact, very drunk whilst undertaking that challenge (London commuter stylee). Congrats to Charlotte, I now have a number of friends googling the price of penny farthings for next year.

Another smashing evening- will hopefully be back keeping the tail end in a folding bike heat honest next year!

Yes - only joshing Tanya - superb handling skill to keep that bike 'on track' for so long. He doesn't look it, but must be light as a feather! My snap also shows him with all the regulation kit... D-Lock etc. And he had the crowd laughing.

Plenty of interesting things to browse...

Not much of a photo - more a homage to the speed and power of the Elite race, particularly through the corners. Powerful stuff from all the cyclists who took part, with one or two gentlemen on penny farthings adopting the 'genteel' pose to complement their not inconsiderable skill in riding the flipping things! An event definitely worth visiting.

what a great night out! it started not so well when a moped rider rode into my rear wheel on my way to smithfield (i was so furious at that moment!). wheel buckled, but luckily the bike was still rideable with rear brakes undone.
once in the smithfield - the cycling party atmosphere as usual. signed in, many familiar faces from last years race, amusing penny farthings (and their owners), lean&mean elite racers. heat one went ok, made it to the final. then watched penny farthings racing, support race, women race etc. the folding bike race time came, and i could feel adrenalin in the air - it is very competitive! went to the start line, flag down, mad dash to the bike, unfold, off i go. first! i know my abilities well, and having accomplished racers behind i knew i'll have a hard time to maintain the lead. cheering crowds (StuAff, Aperitif, Tim H, User10571 among them!!), motorbike camera crew in the front, peloton catching up steadily.. i was enjoying my moment of "glory" as long as i could. then at the last third of last lap the leading peloton sailed past me and i finished 8th, exactly as last year! David Rees finished first, Germain Burton second (some were expecting Germain to win).
well, the message is clear - i need to get much stronger if i want to go for the win. anyway i have immensely enjoyed the event and will definitely be there next year!

The youngster in the school blazer is Germain Burton. He won the E/1/2s at Palace a month ago, and to think he was still at primary school five or six years ago ! Watch him. And David Rees more or less lives for this race these days!
