I am interested in tackling this event and find that Global Adventure Challenges and Across the Divide are two companies that have organised a London to Paris cycle ride on the same date and basically using the same route. Does anyone have experience of either of these companies?

i have looked into the Global Adventures one , contacting people of the Face book site and asking what the company was like and got glowing references about the organization and friendlyness.
We are doing it with Global in September this year , so only 9 months for training ,,,,
Would be interested to know if any CycleChatters have been with them

They actually look pretty good.

I have just had a look and perhaps wouldn't mind the September one.

Do you guys know, if I chose the fund raising option, how much goes to a charity, I assume £1000, and which charity is it?

Thanks.

You can choose your own charity. The self funding option is £620 plus the £149 registration fee. With this option I think it is up to you then to contact your chosen charity and arrange sponsorship. The £620 is therefore the cost of the trip.
The sponsored option costs£1240(minimum amount of sponsorship and of this £620 (half of it) goes towards the cost of the trip. The remainder (minimum of £620 depending on how much sponsorship you raised above the £1240) goes towards your chosen charity. These are the figures from AcrosstheDivide
GlobalAdventureChallenges figures are slightly different. 1. £650 self funding and 2. £1650 minimum sponsorship option. With this £1000 (as you said) minimum would go to your chosen charity. Plus, of course, the £149 registration fee.
I am tempted towards GAC because the information they provide is in more detail and better presented than AtD.
Also, DiddlyDodds has positive comments about them.

Interesting, thanks Nigel.

I just had a proper look on the website and see what you have said.

This does look promising, now how easy is it to raise £1,650...I would be looking at September also.

If you are just going to ask people to give you money, then I imagine that you're going to struggle. My experience has been that putting on some sort of event is much more successful.

Got any mates in bands or who DJ? A pub which commonly puts on gigs will likely let you host an event for free as you'll be bringing punters in. You'll need to cover the acts' expenses but you should show a net profit.

A tea party will appeal to a different crowd: ask people to bake a cake for you to sell and offer teas and coffee etc.

Jumble sale/bring & buy: old fashioned perhaps but they work. Ask people to donate items they no longer use, like as not they'll be glad to get rid of them.

Broadly speaking, I think you need to offer people something for their money, rather than just expecting them to cough-up because you are going cycling.

We are doing it in September and self funding , really looking forward to it.
Doing it with two others from work , one of them being the owner of the company so with any luck he will be our sponsor and pay some of the cost.

I aim to do it in June - the start date is my birthday. Not sure yet whether to go with GlobalAdventureTravel (my initial preference) or AcrosstheDivide. Both cost roughly the same through self funding but GAT finish overlooking the Eiffel Tower. Going to ring AtD to see if they finish at or close to the base of the Tower.

Don't know if you have decided which company you are going with but I spoke to both of them this morning - AcrosstheDivide and GlobalAdventureTravel. GAT wins hands down for pre and post ride organisation. My concern was arriving in London the night before, booking hotel, parking the car for 4 days, getting to the start point and then getting from the finish point back to my car. GAT have it all organised and will even book the hotel which is close to the start. At the finish you will be transported back to the hotel to pick up your car. They also finish the ride at the base of the Eiffel Tower.
AtD leave you to your own devices pre ride and post ride which, for me, would have been a logistical nightmare.
Hope this info. is of help.

When i spoke to them the chap told me they start from the Holiday inn Bexley, so stay there the night Before , walk down for Breakfast and then set off , and the hotel is happy for you to leave your car there for the time you are away.

That's what I mean. It is all well organised. I was given that information as well. However, AcrosstheDivide do not have this organised at all. From their starting point in Blackheath they have no agreement with the two local hotels and no car parking arrangements. They suggested I get a hotel outside London with car parking arrangements and train it in on the day of the ride with my bike. I would then have to do the same in reverse on completion of the event from St Pancras. Talk about hassle.
So you can see that GlobalAdventure win hands down.
