Me, My good lady and the not so little one have had our Trek road bikes for nearly 3 months and have not left them out of our sight.

Holiday soon and I know we will have to leave them locked up while we go off and do something else.

Lots of interesting stuff read re locks and the ones from Abus appear to have rave reviews.( not sure which ones would suit my needs best ? )

Was thinking of buying 2 of said locks and adding a couple of cables to cover most "moving bits" when the 3 bikes are left side by side?

Got any better ideas to stop somebody taking our bikes?

Thanks

Put them indoors while you are away. Not sure how much more secure you could get tbh.

Mine goes in the lounge if I am away any length of time (2 nights +) or it stays, locked in the shed normally.

When we are camping, we stow the bikes in the car. But, whenever we have a solid building; gite or hotel room, they come into the room.

I think they are taking the bikes with them so want to secure the 3 bikes whilst they are all off sightseeing etc etc ?

Two Abus locks will certainly immobilise them and provided you remove things like lights, computers etc. you should have everything covered. Ideally one of the two locks should anchor to something like a fence. I find it best to make sure that one arm of the lock goes between the spokes of the rear wheel with the other arm going on the far side of the rear upright of the frame.

That arrangement has always worked for me when touring.

Depends where you're going too, if say it's camping in France locking your bike isn't always necessary at the campsite - I use Oxford locks on mine when out and about.
If it's this country lock them at all times and as others have said take off the lights, etc.

My mate thought it wasn't necessary on French campsites until his Boardman Team HT was stolen in Biarritz.

I use a sold secure D lock (Magnum, Halfords,30 quid, bargain) and a 6m length of hardened steel cable. The cable goes round a solid object (last year it was a tree, the year before that one of the legs of the mobile home, then through each bike via both wheels and the frame, terminating in the D Lock through the wheel and frame of the outermost bike. If they are determined to nick one they will, but this certainly deters the opportunists.
