these seem to be something that has appeared recent.y (I have similar on one of my bikes).

what is the advantage of these? As far as I can see, they just add more weight but ....

Periodically water seemed to wick inside up the grips I was using and they'd slip about for days after. I didn't want to risk a spill due to the grips twisting off at the wrong time, so thought they'd be worth a punt.

Also I've been swapping handlebars between bikes and generally messing about with setups so seemed less hassle than having to wrestle grips off everytime. I dunno if they're really worth it, but are rock-solid and seem make life easier if you're faffing about.

Lock-on's, quite possible the best bit of kit invented.......

Put them on, never come loose until you need to remove them. Which you can do as often as you like, if you're that way inclined.

Been using ODI Rogue's for ages.

I think they're a good idea. I use old Specialized body geometry grips. They are asymmetrical and they rotate around the bars which is very annoying.

I have a pair on my bike and the only plus point is that the grips are larger diameter hence suit me nicely.

anyways, a quick look on ebay resulted in me buying 3 pairs - search to whyte lock on ; seem to be surplus stock from whyte bikes.
