I went to Hornsea from Beverley today via back roads, but had to do a bit of the main road. However, I see on the map that there is a road to Eske that should join up to a Leven back road. There was a dead end sign up, but I figured it might just be for cars. When I got so far there was a sign up saying 'High Esk - Private Road'.

Questions:

Does it join a road or track to Leven?
Have I got a right of way?

Tracklogs suggests that the public RoW goes past Tickton Grange only as far as Eske and the route to cross the Levens Canal at Waterloo Farm is private.

Assuming I have the right place...

Thanks. Probably crapped out then. I have the name of the access guy at the council. He was out today, but going to ring tomorrow.

If the road connects, perhaps I could ring the farm? Might they let me through if I ask nicely?! I know it seems desperate, but it is such a bind having to go on that horrible road, when the single tracks are so peaceful.

There's no harm in asking, although if the farmers by us are anything to go by, I doubt they will allow you across their land. One of our local farmers, who we know fairly well, has a public footpath across one of his fields near our house & he tries to disccourage walkers (ie no footbridge over the dyke) My wife asked if he'd mind her riding her horse down there, but he was worried that everyone else would she her & do the same - all 3 horse owners in the village ???

Ah, cheers all. I have had a look at the satellite map, and it seems that there is a single track to get me where I want to go. There are only fields and one house set back off the road some way - surely there is a 'right to roam' if you stay away from crops? I would check it out, but the thought of nasty dogs tearing apart trespassers stops me!

The Swine road is a fairly long detour - fine for a leisurely ride, and I have considered it, but I like to cycle to visit family in Hornsea for the day, and don't want to take too long..

Be intrested to see how you get on... (A1035 is a pig)

The footpath on the A1035 is rideable, but poor quality, used to be a cycle route / path (eons ago) when you get to white cross roundabout cross via the 'bridleway' on the roundabout onto the A165 for about a mile turn off onto Long Riston, head up Dancing Lane until the curve to Catwick Lane, turn left onto this, a few hundred yards on your right is whins lane, follow this for a mile & half,

you now have two options:

1) turn right and head towards 'Rise', turn left at the junction onto B1234 follow road arond upto 'Whitedale' and shortly join 'route 66' to Hornsea.

2) Head straight on over the road (Mill Lane / Eastfiled Road) and over the local 'col de holderness' at the next junction turn right and head towards Little Hatfield then Great Hatfield joining route 66 at Ye old Sigglethorn Railway Sation & head to Hornsea

Might be worth checking this out via Google maps

Ps I am not responsible for any of my directions

Cheers - but after White Cross is OK for me - I just go through Leven/Brands then back roads to Bewholme-Hornsea. Not bad at all.

It is the A Road. Some real tosspots, including someone last time who - despite the fact it was a huge straight stretch and I was riding perfectly, almost skimmed my handlebars after leaning on his horn from some way off. I wanted to hurt him.

I thought about the path but it is really narrow and/or dug up.
