For last week been doing approx 5 mile rides {bloody hard work}
today i went for 10 did 5 mile to a local lake met the missus and youngest there
had a walk round then 5 back
now i know its not much but after my first few mile a week ago i nearly had heart attack today was a breeze
does it get easier that quick ? or was it the sneaky snickers inbeetween haha?

it could be a bit of both - you been doing regular 5 milers and doubling it and adding in a bit of food, gave that extra boost of energy you needed.

some people can do 50, 60, 70 miles on just water, some need food to keep going longer. do whatevers best for you. today you found out a little snack helped with energy levels, as you get fitter, stronger you may not need those snacks.

some internet sites say you need to eat/drink 50/60 grammes of carbs per hour of exercise.

well the lake we go is a mile walk that probably helped give me a little breather
do you cycle every day or miss a couple out just to recoup so to speak?

I was knackered after my first commute, but after doing it a couple of times I was fine. Now I'm miffed if I can't cycle into work one day and have to take the car.

Fast and careful!
every one has to build up,a twenty mile hilly ride may be harder than a thirty mile flat,I do my commute at speed, always times to beat but my longer leisure rides i sometimes bimble if i ride solo but if i ride in a pack you ride at a pace, how long you ride for can be contributed by diet, rest, fitness, weather, fluid intake and even current attitude and of course how much time you have, there are many different levels of riding thats why its such a pleasant past time,if riding 10 miles to a coffee shop for a cake and latte and ride back on a sunny day suits you and your family go for it you will get the bug to build up,every time you get on a bike you don't have to break the sound barrier!,as you build up you can do speed, distance or even pick a ride with lots of inclines, but remember to enjoy what you do

youl getter better very quickly, once you start hitting around 20 miles youll find youll be able to increase the miles in bigger increments. i started cycling again in march, found around 7 miles hard to do. after a few weeks i got upto 20miles, first try at the 20 left me completly nackered and pains in my legs. now i can do 50/60miles and feel ok afterwards. also my average speed is improving, on a 4 mile stretch ive gone from 12mph to 21mph, by using intervals. didnt think it would get easier so quick but it does, just keep at it.

also, make sure your bikes setup properly as anything rubbing can make a small journey seem like a marathon

Dont overdo it though.

But it does get easier, ive just got back from a 20 mile 1500 ft climb ride.

For a bit of fun, use bike hike to plot your routes and see the elevation etc.

oh, and well done.

I only use bikehike because you can save a copy of the screenshot along with the elevation.

(one of my training rides)

I keep a log of them.

There may be other sites people use as well.
