Link removal

I have a trike with a extremely long chain (standard chain links I believe) which has no split link & it needs a link removing due to the chain tensioners already being fully adjusted & the chain still being a bit slack. Do 2 links have to be removed? I initially took 2 links off but it was just a bit too much & removing one link appeared to not line the links in sequence do I need to buy a split link or something else? Can you only remove 2 links at a time or can you remove singular links? I'm not experienced in chain repairs so any help is much appreciated thanks.

As you can tell I'm a novice so any help is greatly appreciated

You need to remove two outer plate links, plus the link in between, then rejoin using the right sized powerlink./ KMC missing link. This will result in the net loss of one full link, as the powerlink replaces one outer plate (half) link.

My tricycle currently has a Shimano Nexus 7 speed hub so I guess this one will be suitable - http://www.wiggle.co.uk/kmc-78-speed-chain-links/ ?
There's 2 options for this product -
7.3mm pin for Shimano HG
7.1mm pin for Shimano IG

Which one do I buy if this is a suitable product?

It should say so on the chain itself. Usually printed on the outer plate. If not, order both. If they're both easy to close it'll be 7.1, if only one closes easily it'll be 7.3

Upon searching for any numbers on my chain I found it does have a split link after all (my trike is 7 feet long so the chain is pretty god damn long) Do I still need to order a powerlink./ KMC missing link (http://www.wiggle.co.uk/kmc-78-speed-chain-links) to take a single link off my chain?
Should you use a power link on a chain that already has a split pin? I only ask as in a previous post of mine I thought my chain didn't have a split link when I was recommended a power link. I do need to get back to cycling ASAP for a charity ride I'm doing so as so as I get my answer I can order my parts & get back to training.

To be honest the KMC links are pretty bullet proof.

I cant see why you would have a problem using the shimano pin and a kmc link.

In fact you can use more than 1 quick link anyway.
