I've just been for my first appointment with a sports physio; there's nothing specifically wrong but I figure I've gotten away with chucking a lot of abuse (paging @fnar) at my body over the years and as I'm nearing 40 I ought to start taking care if I want to be cycling into old age. I visited a physio who is a cyclist on a recommendation from a fellow cyclist.

I did a 100 mile ride at a fairly leisurely pace yesterday so I figured the day after a sportive would be a way of getting the most value for money out of the appointment.

I was pleasantly surprised to learn that I'm in pretty good shape, well apart from the (very) long-term lumbar region troubles and the rib damage from a couple of months ago. Apparently one of my legs is longer than the other (ditto most humans) and by moving one of my cleats slightly forward on the shoe I should be able to minimise the knee trouble my freakish legs are causing me, which is awesome.

It turns out riding my 52/17 singlespeed for so long on so many short sharp fast rides has given me enormous thighs, but I've done nothing to build up the pelvic floor and lower back muscles needed to support such large hams. I've been getting more into the longer high cadence rides recently anyway, so the ability to sprint to 30mph on 15 seconds (on the flat!) is an ability I'm willing to lose in favour of weighing less and being slimmer.

Now I have to figure out how to tense my pelvic floor muscles and hold them at 50% taughtness for a few seconds ten times in a row three times a day.

All good stuff, I'm reassured and chuffed to be officially told that I'm in pretty good shape

In fact, I'm nearly 40, have lower back issues and one leg shorter than the other.....

Are you my long lost twin?!!

That would explain why my childhood bedroom always had two beds in it...

Surely the same cycling that helped build up the thigh muscles (which is a questionable claim, incidentally) would also have seen corresponding adaptions in the pelvic & lower back muscles? Or were you not talking about these from a cycling perspective?
