If we're steering clear of ultra-expensive lights (over £75), are the Hove Vision 1s still the best around?

Are the Decathlon Force 9's the best of the cheapies?

I'm a Hope person ... but are you only looking at proper bike lights or including torches too?

Import a magicshine and you have the best light for under £75.

But it all depends on your needs, running on aa's. waterproofness, company history etc..

The Magicshine is most probably the brightest one. The early models have had some reliability issues, particularly with the batteries (one US importer's issued a recall of Magicshine batteries) so having a second light as backup might be advisable if you want to go down this route. Saying that, I've seen at least one chap with a Magicshine on the FNRttC.

Someone's posted a link to another Magicshine light on ebay for £40 here. Lower power (similar in brightness to the Hope 1) but would be quite adequate for unlit lanes.

I've been using a RSP Asteri 3 on my commute bike. It's not as bright as the Hope 1, but I've used it on unlit country lanes without problems. It has a metal body so is quite robust and a 7.5 hour burn time on high. It's a good light for the money.

For a cheap light, I'd suggest the Smart Polaris 5, though that's more of a light to be seen rather than use to see with.

I've got a Polaris 5 and the Decathlon cheapie is even brighter. Indeed, it's brighter than the Cateye EL300 that I used on my first Dynamo. Which is not bad for £9.99 for both front and back lights.

The RSP looks pretty darn good for the money - thanks!

Can anybody give me a reliable link for a Magicshine?

I've been looking around for a decent front light recently, and realised that i have a real dislike for the torch shaped lights. I can't think of a sensible reason for this, but its put me off buying anything so far.. Anyone else feel this way?

Yes, I can understand what you mean.

I was of a similar mind, then couldn't resist one of these real bargains. It's not that brilliant as a main light but is good for a back-up/flasher.

Having mounted it on my bike, I found I got used to quite liked the torch-style, as it takes up less space on the bars than a 'bike'-style one.

Horses ... etc
