The Magicshine is most probably the brightest one. The early models have had some reliability issues, particularly with the batteries (one US importer's issued a recall of Magicshine batteries) so having a second light as backup might be advisable if you want to go down this route. Saying that, I've seen at least one chap with a Magicshine on the FNRttC.
Someone's posted a link to another Magicshine light on
ebay for £40
here. Lower power (similar in brightness to the Hope 1) but would be quite adequate for unlit lanes.
I've been using a
RSP Asteri 3 on my commute bike. It's not as bright as the Hope 1, but I've used it on unlit country lanes without problems. It has a metal body so is quite robust and a 7.5 hour burn time on high. It's a good light for the money.
For a cheap light, I'd suggest the
Smart Polaris 5, though that's more of a light to be seen rather than use to see with.
