Light chain oil in large containers?

Hi,

As the thread title suggests, I want to find a source for some light chain oil in large containers. I'm fed up with buying chain oil in silly little containers that don't last long enough. I prefer the light (i.e. low-viscosity) oil, even though I have to apply it more often.

Any recommendations?

Chain saw oil is good - but I still have 5 litres of semi synthetic 5/30 engine oil left over from my last car. If I upgrade my trike to a faster model, I might have to upgrade the oil to fully synthetic - which is fine because that's what my current car uses! (To be honest, I think my current trike has the capabilities to be much faster - but the current engine's (me) power to weight ratio is far too low)

It works absolutely fine. Engine oil is designed to withstand great extremes of temperature - but it has to work when the engine is cold too. Using engine oil for a bicycle (tricycle in my case) is very much a case of overkill - but a lot of cyclists drive too and probably have a good supply of engine oil - but spend unnecessary cash on an inferior product that claims to be bike specific.

Which is exactly why I'm looking for alternatives. Thanks for the replies, people, I really appreciate it. Cyclechat comes up with the goods, as usual :thumbsup:.

I run 3 bikes regularly, I use around 4oz Progold Prolink a year. Just about to order 16 oz pack from Evans - £15.29 - should last me getting on for 4 years = £3.83 a year = about 7.5p per week ......... there are lots of other things I could economize on before having to cut down on this extravagant indulgence!

I use 70 weight synthetic gear oil. It's relatively cheap, clingy (technical term that), and is more than up to managing the pressures involved. I'm a bit anal about chain cleaning, but my chains last as long as they ever did with the branded cycle chain ungents.

Well, I seem to go through them faster than that, perhaps it's the distance I cover in a year.

Maybe. I'm very sparing with application - use a hypodermic needle, just one drop per roller. I aim to do around 5K miles in a year.
