Doesn't seem to be much of a turnout from the top riders for this one, eh?
Only been watching cycling for a few weeks, so I hardly know any of the big names anyway, but there just seems to be a bit of a dearth on this one considering it's a Monument.
Er, watch for a bit longer. Teams have lots of riders and some are single day classics specialists, others stage race riders, others sprinters who specialise in stage wins. LBL does not suit the sprinter types at all, far too many difficult shortish clibs in the second half of 255km, plus a challenging last 10km. Ask Nibali..! So what happens at the last of the early classics is that punchers ride, and some big names don't, when they may be in preparation for Tour of Romandie, Tour de Suisse, and TdF.
The late season classics are peppered with riders whose stage races and mid-season may not have gone so well. Be patient, 18 teams with a roster of 30 riders each, riding three or more races at the same time, plus injuries and illness, affects team selection, and part of management is deciding to fulfil commitments (you HAVE to start in World Tour races as a Protour team) without worrying about the result too much, but focussing on main objectives.
It's all part of a very complex business.
