sorry about rather useless title but i really don't know what it is!

basically it is only my right hand leg, when i stretch it out dead straight i can feel a very slight pain behind the shin (a quick googling suggests it might be my gastrocnemius muscle) this pain only worsens as a tilt my foot up ie: balls of my feet up
not cycling related as i haven't really been riding as of lately (time issues) but i have been working on lambing recently and been running around fields and diving in and onto my knees to catch ewes

any idea what this is and how it was caused? nothing too serious really just curious?
Cheers Ed

Sounds like the lambing might be the cause! I've heard it's pretty tough work!

If its shin splints its easily fixed by a committed bit of stretching.
Not once in a while like usual, 30mins every day

Young Ed: there is a link to the technical stuff below that may appeal to your engineering brain but in the mean time:
If you practice a sport or exercise that is limited in its movements (like cycling) the muscles used become tighter than those not used much or at all which creates an imbalance. The whole ankle/foot/calf area is susceptible to this in a cyclist so you MUST compensate with massage and stretching although stretching could make it worse if done statically when cold. When you kneel and sit back on your calves you are stretching muscles that are not used to it - hence the pain which is the same effect as stretching cold muscles.
So work on flexibility of your ankles.

If it is shin splints the OP should get down to a sports injury clinic and find out why the problem has occurred in the 1st place!

decided that it is not shin splits and probably just pulled the muscle a weee bit more than it should or twisted it somewhere it shouldn't go as after a fairly relaxing day of lifting some not too heavy crates of plants it is all back to normal
thanks for the help though!

@Easytigers yes it is tough work! not anything for the clean city slicker types
@T4tomo nope not Welsh round here in kent! farming the Welsh Lleyn sheep from the Welsh Lleyn peninsula (Lleyn is pronounced Clin as it is Welsh )
