I have loads of good quality padded shorts but only one pair of good quality tights and a cheapy pair from Aldi. Tights are so expensive so now I am wondering if leg warmers worn with decent shorts is a workable alternative.

Thoughts appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Compo,
I got a pair for Christmas (cheap pair of MS...can be found for £7 online) They're roubaix material so pretty toasty. I used them with bibshorts the other day in pretty cold weather and found them to be just as warm as my normal tights, quite comfy too. It was a bit of a weird feeling at first but soon got used to it as you have the grippers for the leg warmers higher up on your thigh then the grippers for the sorts around your knee, but not really a problem. I think tights have overall comfort but good for days when all of your tights are in the wash and you need some protection, they definitely do the job.

I use running tights over my shorts , not as good as dedicated cycling tights but they do the job, i also use ron hill bikesters as they are cut higher at the back .

I still have a couple of pairs of running tights from my marathon days. Only problem is they are lumo-yellow, and at 66 years old and now a bit rotund there are limits

I have been looking this morning at leg warmers. I wish the daft sizing of L, XL, XXL etc could be consigned to history. Without a sizing chart for the manufacturer they are meaningless. I have three jackets, one L, one XL and one XXXL. Measured with a tape measure they all measure the same size. It is the same with shorts, I have XL and XXL, both the same size. Unless sellers can give an actual size measurement in inches or even cms, I no longer buy clothing online.

I'm fast becoming a grumpy old man.

I know what you mean.
To get around it I often buy two or three of what I want in the various sizes and return the ones that don't fit.
Ribble, Evans, Wiggle and CRC* have excellent "returns" systems.

* Other on-line stores are available.

It can be worthwhile making sure your shorts are as warm as your leg warmers. The knee / leg warmers I have are roubaix fabric, but I would only wear them with shorts of a similar material and not thin summer shorts, otherwise you may get cold where you least want it...
