the hex doesn't actually rotate during pedalling, but the pedal does. If you watch carefully, the pedal rotates around it's axle in the opposite direction to the rotation of the crank, known as precession. Jobst Brandt has a good explanation of what's going on here linkylink
Or, make a "tosser" sign around a pencil which is point down on the desk and move it round. You'll see the pencil rotates in the opposite direction to your hand.
