Can anyone or more than one help.
One of my cycling buddies wants to cycle to see a relative in LSA.
He has already asked me about getting to Halifax .Which i have started to pick one CC's brains .

He is not able to get the use of a computer .This is why he has asked me and i have told him about you lot .
Could (we) put together a nice backway ride to LSA .

Many thanks .

Oh and maybe a map so he can carry it with him .I can download .

I've already sent you a PM about the Halifax route - for quiet routes that doesn't look good! I'd recommend that he jumps on a train from Leeds with his bike and gets off at Hebden Bridge or Todmorden, go for a nice ride round here ending up back at his sister's. Eventually back on the train at Halifax to go back to Leeds.

Same problem with a route to LSA - getting out of Leeds on quiet roads isn't easy. Once off the A-roads though there are some lovely routes to LSA if he is fit enough to take a long route and some serious hills. If not, he'd have to pretty much ride to Halifax, take the A646 to the outskirts of Burnley, turn left for Padiham, take the A671 to Whalley, the B6246 to Great Mitton, the B6243 to Longridge, the B5269 to Singleton, the B5260 through Weeton and the B5259 to LSA. Even that fairly direct route would be 130 km or so (80 miles).

You could pick up the NCN from colins neck of the woods and take it all the way through blackburn, preston then LSA. Very scenic but depends when your doing it as some days it can get icy and cold around this time of year.

I think describing Blackburn and Preston as scenic is stretching the definition somewhat! ;) I'm not sure exactly what route the NCN takes though - it probably skirts round those towns.

this is the way i go on one of my 100 mile rides, starting from [FONT=&quot]Whalley, go through Ribchester, Longridge, Broughton, Woodplumpton,Bartle Hall, Treales,, kirkham, and along minor roads, avoiding Wrea Green and the coast to Saint Annes, there are cyle routes posted along some sections of this route,
i live about midway between Leeds and LSA, this route is all minor roads which are usually quiet. the busiest place is probably kirkham. i've got a .gpx file for the route if you're intrested. i've tried to attach it but it's an invalid file type.

Oh yes, I'd forgotten that I also prefer the Ribchester route to Longridge from Whalley. I'm just so used to doing it via Mitton.

If you go to Bikely you can upload it there - use Create Route/Import Route.

Quite true colin, I was leaning towards the burnley, grane road and rivington sections of the pennines, although near samlesbury (between BB and Preston) is scenic IMO.

leeds - farsley - eccleshill - bit of ring road (sorry) - allerton (here you could head to scenic denholme clough way to stanbury via peninestone) - howarth - stanbury - laneshawbridge - colne - fence - whalley and just follow the a59 from there.

A59 is a death trap from whalley, narrow and busy with heavy traffic heading for the motorway.a road to be avoided at all costs.

i don't think theres much in it, mytton is safer when it's frosty!

I hope this link works. http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Quiet-route-from-Whalley-to-Lytham-Saint-Annes
The track has lost a few of the curves converting to .gpx but is still fairly acurate
Thanks colinj.

there's an excellent cafe, popular with cyclists, signposted from bartle hall, it's not far off the route and is easy to find. I'd waypoint it but i don't know how!

I have taken most of the Halifax route I gave you this morning, then bromptonfb's bit from Oxenhope to Whalley, and piedwagtail's section from Whalley to LSA and combined them into one superb route.

138 km (86 miles), very hilly for the first 2/3 and a nice gentle finish. A good cafe stop at Coldwell Activity Centre at about the halfway point (usually open Wed-Sun, tel. 01282 601819 to confirm). Plenty of shop-stops available especially at Whalley and Longridge.

Route on Bikely.
