I'm going to a lifestyle show at Sandown Park next Saturday and was planning to get a train to Leatherhead then cycle the rest of the way (a little over 6 miles). The route I was planning was to follow the minor road north out of Leatherhead then turn left and follow the A244 up to Esher then turn onto the A307 which takes me to the racecourse. Are there likely to be any issues with this route? Also, can I leave a bike locked up at the racecourse for 2-3 hours and expect it to still be there when I am ready to leave?

Its actually a really nice route, I live in oxshott and enjoy cycling in this area immensley. Esher is also quite and affluent and safe area so no worries about your bike, hope you enjoy your time in sunny surrey

My limited experience of the A244 is not so happy. I rate as one to be avoided if possible; the proportion of close passes seems to be higher than average.

I hate to be discouraging but I cannot suggest an on road alternative but the following may be viable if offorad routes are acceptable:
  • NW on A245, R onto Oaklawn Rd, L onto A244 and after 500m R into Princes Covert (offroad trails)
  • head N to Claygate and then on road NW to Esher
Surrey Cycle Guide #3 is useful.

Good luck!
