I have been a London Cycling Campaign member for a while now, but I only joined to take advantage of the inclusive third party insurance and legal assistance. A few years ago I joined British Cycling, likewise only for the insurance cover. As far as I can see there is actually little to choose between the two organisations as they both offer very similar products. One big thing that is likely to keep me with LCC is that my annual membership is £19 as an OAP compared to BC's £32 with no concessions offered. I am very aware though that in insurance price isn't always the best deciding factor so I was wondering if anyone had reasons why I should choose one over the other.

Being a somewhat solitary person I don't belong to any clubs and don't fancy the CTC which is why I am only looking at the two offerings above.

Same here.Interested in joining something as I'm told so often I have no insurance and don't pay road tax.I really haven't got a clue who is best to join, though.

I've personally not been overly impressed with the legal team used by BC for my ongoing injury claim but others have had good experiences. This may well be the case for other organisations too

The other discounts like halfords are useful and can cover the cost of membership

I'm not why you would be a member of both unless involved in their activities

I'm part of the local LCC committee but as a BC member I've not joined. Until the legal case is sorted, I probably need to stay with BC but I may switch in future

In your shoes, if simply a member for the legal stuff, I'd just go with LCC as cheaper unless you also use the other BC benefits

i won't use LCC just for the sheer fact they lie.

they don't speak for all London Cyclists at all.

CTC seem to be good so far for me on my PI claim.

I don't go out riding with them either, and the discounts on stuff I get at Cotswold and Cycle surgery as part of the membership pays for the membership.

The borough of Lewisham has an interesting scheme that comes with free lcc membership For a tenner you hire a bike for a month with an option to buy later on if you want. You also get a year's lcc membership. Details of the scheme for people who live, work or study in the borough here
Maybe not useful for the op but sounds like a good deal for people wanting to try out cycling again or take it up for the first time

Leigh Day were fine for the first year. The second year has been rather more frustrating from my point of view! More the useless ortho expert appointed by the third party agency to be fair but they haven't been exactly proactive in resolving the issues until I jumped up and down!

Others seem to have had smoother experiences. @Sara_H isnt enamoured with the Slater & Gordon team handling her case. I expect some cases are easy bread and butter but it's how the out of the ordinary is handled is also important

As an aside, I don't think any activist organisation could speak for all London cyclists given the breadth and depth of the population!

S&G handled mine and it was a far from straightforward case. What with the Police being the cause of the collision. They tried their damn hardest to try foil the action against them. It took a while with S&G sticking to their guns with only the treat of court action against the Police managing to get a satisfactory result.

I'm only going on what Sara said in a recent post

https://www.cyclechat.net/threads/question-about-compensation-again.200167/

It may be that every other legal firm would act (or not) similarly

Lack of proactivity has been my issue, I've had to keep chasing
Liability was accepted in my case within a month or so. No further on really 2 years down the line. The medical reporting has been pretty slow and poor to date. I've refused to see the second expert booked based on my experience of the first and am waiting to see someone else

We can only go on personal experience or reports from others which are of course anecdotes. Hence 'ymmv'. We all experience and view the world in a different way ultimately

I'm also anti-LCC. I'm on their mailing lists and disagree with almost everything they have to say and yet they say to the world that "they represent all London cyclists". They don't. They represent the cyclists that don't want to be on the road with other traffic and are in favour of those stupid bus stops that sit on an "island" between cycle path and road.

I'm not a massive fan of the CTC either after their botched job of my claim for Emsworth but membership is required for the Fridays and the £2 Fridays subscription knock £18 off the CTC sub.

and they must also know that , which is why it grates so much when they claim they do. they also demonstrate bad ( illegal TBH) riding practice . I am sure we allknow what a cycle in a red circle means.

anyway , off topic .

Hope you get sorted and hope my PI is an easy one.

but what about my mental state .... OK that was screwed before the smash .

I am waiting for the no helmet stance from the other side. I want to know how wearing a helmet on top of the bright orange hi viz as i was going home from rail site makes a difference
