When you push your brake lever inwards it used to move the chain to a bigger sprocket on the cassette, now when you push inwards it moves it down?

Top Normal - Use for precision up shifting and emergency downshifting
This is the conventional return spring system preferred by traditional and gravity riders and is best matched with Rapidfire Plus gear shifters.

Top Normal design rear mechs rest under the smallest rear sprocket and use their return spring to return the derailleur to this position when shifting from larger cogs.

Low Normal - Use for the smoothest shifting under load, drive train durability and pre-selecting gears

Low Normal design rear mechs rest under the largest rear sprocket and use their return spring to return the derailleur to this position when shifting from smaller cogs.

This design means that when combined with Rapidfire Plus levers, the shifting becomes reversed. Low normal rear derailleurs are best matched with Dual Control Levers.
Shimano Deore XT has established a tradition as the recognised standard in high performance components. As mountain biking becomes more diverse, obviously the components must evolve. The group addresses the various needs of today’s riders continuing to evolve, to keep pace with the changing demands of the latest bicycle designs and riding styles. The new Deore XT system features popular and revolutionary functions from the Shimano XTR group with additions like the Shadow rear derailleur and high power Servo Wave disc brakes.

Rapid rise, you'll get use to it or take it back and get the shop to change it to normal.

Well I have learnt something new today.
The M771 is the standard mech whereas the new one I have is a M770 with rapid rise.
I may have a chat with the LBS tomorrow to see if they realise, surprised the mechanic did not mention it when testing it.

Thanks for the info, I knew there must be a logical explanation to it.

Can you confirm if the levers are STI or Rapid Rise.

IIRC rapid rise (also known as low-normal) is a function of the rear derailleur - The levers used are irrelevant. The spring action of a rapid rise derailleur works in the opposite way to a standard model.

As others have said, the only way I can think this is possible is if they have replaced the rear mech with a rapid rise model.

bring back down tube levers much easier

maybe but it still will shift in opposite direction. but once you have ridden STI, you will find it some much easier to shift than having to remove your hand off the bar and fumble around feeling for for the down tube lever, it is a backwards step IMO.
