As per my previous post (General Discussions) and the good advice received I went to my LBS.........
I have 10 speed 105s..............Cassette is 11-28
LBS tell me I can fit a 11-32 cassette but (as others have said) would probably need a new cage thingymajig........total cost £100ish.
Now I stongly believe that expertise has to be paid for but that does seem a lot considering I can buy the cassette for £11.00ish.
Is it reasonable ??

If the £100-ish includes a new 105 rear mech and the cassette then it's not a bad price if you don't want to do it yourself.

Other alternative is to source the parts yourself and ask how much they'll charge to fit them.

To go from 28 to 32 teeth you'll need to use a long cage rear mech, so you may need to factor in that cost and a new chain as well as the cassette.

CRC will sell you that lot for around £65 ish delivered so factor in that an LBS will charge more for the parts, and add on their labour charge and £100 might be pretty close

Now you mention it I he did mention a new chain so pretty sure that was included.
Thanks for that.

£11.00 seems cheap for a 10 speed cassette. The LBS is likely quoting R.R.P. for all parts (more than on-line prices anyway).

You could probably source the parts yourself and buy the tools for less than £100. Plenty of guides to follow on YouTube.

If you didn't have any of the tools or parts.... (all approx prices)

New 105 deurailleur (if you need one) = £25
New 105 cassette + chain = £35
Chain breaker + quick link = £15 - £20
Chain whip + cassette removal tool = £15

Factor in the time it'll take to do it, if you have to re-index the deurailleur, say 90 mins if it's a bit fiddly?

Take your pick....

With the added benefit that you'll have the tools required to change the cassette/chain yourself in future.....

I've found if you have a modicum of mechanical sympathy* , there's nothing exactly complicated in building/repairing a bike.
Coupled with the easy availability of on-line parts and tutorials it's pretty much a no-brainer to buy the tools and DIY.

* if however you are a knuckle-dragging neaderthal with the patience of a caffeine addicted toddler, then by all means keep taking the bike to the LBS.....

Indeedly, over time you build up a nice little selection of tools that should see you through for many years and your wallet will thank you. But as you say, if you're not mechanically minded....

Most if not all LBS will charge more to fit parts you bought and give no guarantee on said parts should they go wrong or fail. Some will tell you to depart forthwith. Pays yer money and takes yer choice.
