Is there not a danger of breaking your arms if you fall off and your arm slips through the bar?

Other than that, I know someone who uses them and swears by them for commuting

They are very good for touring. I switched the drops on my upright touring bike for them. They do allow you to get exactly the most comfortable position for each hand.
