The problem with stiction is that it could give you a different answer each time you nudge the instrument. Personally, I'd want pencil marks that have been checked carefully before starting work, and that won't move. Even a wrong reference is better than a wrong one which moves whilst you're in the middle of the job, particularly if it leaves no trace of where it was previously.

I've never used one, but I'm struggling to think of any job I've done where it would have been more convenient.

I doubted the concept for those very reasons, but after buying one, it seems to work perfectly. Presumably they'd be stuffed if you drop it once to often, but that's true of a level as well

Puzzled by your post until I realised that I had posted in the wrong forum. It's an age thing, that should have gone in the retirees forum 😁

no worries - I suffer from medical condition acute sarcasm ! good luck with your venture - we have a few boxes around the garden and bluetits use 2 of them still amazes me how busy they get once they are feeding

A laser level is much faster at determining both vertical & horizontal lines than traditional methods. I check my laser on a regular basis to ensure it's accuracy. Part of my day job is measuring openings for bespoke shower Enclosures, accurate to 1mm both horizontally & vertically ~2400mm. We used to use plumbob & spirit levels, it takes far too long.

some would consider using a laser to nail a bird box up overkill but I admire your thoroughness

using a laser didnt work for goldfinger either

I've decided to order a basic one to start and if I like using it, might upgrade later, it'll only be used inside for now so I don't think brightness will be an issue. Got this one HYCHIKA Laser Level, Laser Levels Self Leveling with Double Laser Module, Laser Spirit Level with 2 Lines Horizontal/Vertical, Flexible Magnetic Base, 2 x AA Batteries

I like the idea of mounting it on a tripod, I'll be having a little rummage round the charity shops for a camera tripod as I believe that'll be compatable.

Laser is here, so tomorrow I have no excuse not to try and put a shelf up

The 'magnetic hanger' it has come with seems very flimsy, so quick trip to the charity shop and I've picked up a camera tripod for £6 as I wanted.

As a sparky I always used water levels string lines or spirit levels all off which can give you slight errors over distances. I now use a dewalt laser which has a tripod and also wall mount. Absolutely brilliant, you do need to set up level using the bubble otherwise not good.

The mount it has I think I will drill a couple holes through so I can screw it into the wall. It was my bathroom installer that gave me the idea as his was very fancy (and I suspect significantly more expensive than mine lol)

You can get a clamp type bracket that will clamp on door frames walls etc. The better lasers are also self leveling.

Yeah it's got a self leveller, the laser itself seems to be on some sort of gimble in the unit that will settle when it is unlocked.
