I have assumed that Armstrong would still be rich at the end of all of this, but if the Landis lawsuit succeeds, it could well bankrupt him. Not a scenario that I would lose any sleep over though ...

An old cynic might see the lawsuit being settled because then there are no court appearances which:
a) cost money with a chance of being worse off than settling
b) means you don't have to go into a witness box on oath
Both of which sound like good reasons to settle.

I'd bet he would pay more than he owed just to get out of the court date! They could have asked him anything they wanted under oath. A very stupid man he would be, should he have lied in that situation. Might get away with that once, at best.
