Two holes on each side should be enough. 5mm or 3/16"

You can get eyelet kits to put a steel eyelet in to protect the leather but it's probably not necessary. The alternative is to use a 5 or 6" nail warmed until red with a blow lamp (or on your gas cooker) pushed through the hole to char and reinforce the holes.

I have one of those hole maker thingy's for making holes (no, really) in belts etc. I would think the saddle would be a bit thick for it though - or I could use a drill ?
