The Labour Party is currently going through a public consultation on its policies for the next general election - including its policy on cycling.

It has to be said that the cycling policy which is contained within the larger Living Standards and Sustainability policy document is a little underdeveloped to say the least.

Encouraging safer cycling
This Government has failed to promote and develop cycling. One of their first acts was to close Cycling England – the independent body to promote cycling – and abandon the Cycling Towns and Cities initiatives which the last Labour Government introduced. The next Labour Government will take steps to promote cycling by making it safer and more accessible. We will set national standards to cut deaths and serious injuries, and take steps to ensure that large vehicles are adequately equipped to reduce the risk of collision. We will also ensure children and young people are educated in cycle safety.
However members of the public can go an comment on the policy on the, oddly named, Your Britain website and the Labour Party claim that all comments will be reviewed and receive a response from someone involved in developing the policy. Shadow junior transport spokesman, Richard Burden, has already picked up on some of the responses about cycling.

I have no idea how seriously public submissions will be treated, but it is potentially an opportunity to influence the cycling policy of the party which could form the next Government so probably worth the effort of submitting something.

The same goes for the wider environmental and transport policies contained in the document.
