La Marmotte 2012 Booking Independently advice needed

Hi A couple of us are looking to do the La Marmotte in 2012 but want to make it part of our "holiday" trip and drive out there, book the entry and accommodation (night before and night of event near start/finish) independently of tour operators. Has anyone does this before and can you offer any advice to us. We really don't want to end up paying over the top to do this event.

I'd recommend posting this on BikeRadar and YACF as well, lots on both places have done it (including a few of my acqaintance).

StuAff - thanks for the reply. After much searching for accommodation it appears that accommodation in and around the start is either booked up or only bookable for a week and even the camping prices have been elevated to match the demand of the event. We have now booked with a dedicated company who have guaranteed places as recommended by a friend and forgotten about the expense for a change. Training has already started!
