Kryptonite sell most of their U-locks with a "Lifetime Limited Warranty", promising to replace a defective lock at any time if returned to them or their authorised distributor.

Has anyone ever succeeded in doing this?

I bought an Evolution Mini-7 about 18 months ago, and was very pleased with it until a few weeks ago when the key started to jam, making unlocking it a bit iffy. Apparently it's a known issue and it can usually be worked around by using a paperclip or small screwdriver to line up all the discs in the barrel before inserting the key (otherwise it may not go in all the way and then won't turn). Kryptonite also recommend lubing the lock with something like Finish Line.

That solution worked for a bit, but the lock gradually became more temperamental up to the point where I started to worry about locking my bike up and then not being able to unlock it. Well that time came today, though fortunately it happened as I was about to lock the bike, not unlock it. So now I have a lock sitting on the shelf that won't open for love nor money with any of the provided keys..

Amazon UK, from whom I bought the lock, laughed when I suggested that they could provide a warranty replacement. Madison (Kryptonite's UK distributor) didn't want to know unless I had a trade account. Last resort was Kryptonite in the US, where I duly filled out a fault report on their website and got an automated response that a ticket had been raised. Time will tell whether the "Lifetime Warranty" is worth the paper it's written on, in the meantime I'm lugging about my wife's Abus that's twice the size and weight (though probably more secure).

Failing that, any recommendations for a secure, compact lock ? I'm happy using something that will fit snugly through the rear triangle, inside the wheel and around a normal Sheffield-type rack.

Finish Line do a whole range of lubes. Kryptonite are specific about which one should be used.
Personally I'd use graphite powder in any lock not a liquid. Nor, I think would I be sticking things into the lock. I've always found the key to be the best way to line the discs up.

The warranty only cover manufacturing defects, not faults arising from normal, nor abnormal, poked with a small screwdriver, wear and tear, and your claim is with Amazon. Who, as you've found, are pants. But you could point them here

I can't rec an alternative as I only use Kryptonite locks having had years of service without issue (which guarantees one will jam the next time I use it D'Oh!)

Funnily enough I have 4 bike locks & the only one I have problems with is my Kryptonite lock. It's not a mini-7 but quite often the key will not turn the lock, needs a bit of fiddling around to get everything lined up  The lock has never been used outside, only used to lock bikes in the garage so not a a major issue, but i won't buy another Kryptonite. My other locks are Bulldog & older, never had a problem :okay:

buying from Amazon was your biggest mistake here! Some of my krypto locks suffer from this problem but a bit of lube and being gentle with the key has kept them going for over 10 years. Madison only deal via the retailer so you can't blame them really.

Interesting this. I thought it was only me that was having an issue - never dreamt of doing a search. I have a New York lock and sometimes the key just turns but it doesn't unlock.

Update: Response from Kryptonite in the USA asking for a photo of my u/s lock and key in exchange for which they will be shipping me a replacement. Result!!

New lock arrived a couple of days ago, can't fault Kryptonite for customer service.

Interestingly, both the key and lock appear to have been redesigned since I bought my original Mini-7. The keys now have a squared-off tip (instead of pointed) and the barrel in the crossbar is now oriented so that the key is inserted and removed with the blade in the same plane as the U, instead of at 90°.

Mine did that, but it was actually unlocking but there was rust the mechanism, so I couldn't separate the parts. A bit of WD 40 sorted it out.
Oh, it happened again! I noticed a bit of rust on the ends of the U, but didn't treat it. Fast forward to yesterday, and I get to the supermarket and I can't open the lock. Luckily
  1. I hadn't used it yet, so I hadn't permanently attached my bike anywhere
  2. It was a Waitrose, so I just wheeled my bike inside (they are very nice folks!)
  3. It was again amenable to spray, and today the lock is working again.
FWIW, this is the email I response I got from Kryptonite the first time it happened.

Key code PPxxxx. Lock is 11 months old. Key turns 180 fine ,but the lock doesn't open. I've sprayed some gt-85, but nothing yet. Lock has been inside most of it's life.

Registered on your site when I purchased the lock.
try spraying a small amount of WD40 into the ends of the U. Let it sit for a couple of minutes and then while you have the key turned to the unlock position, hit the straight part to see if you can get the lock to open.

If this does not work, send the lock and keys into us along with a note and we can replace it for you.

Sounds like they have really good customer service. By the number of problems sounds like they need it though.
This is a false premise, you only hear from the small minority of people for whom a difficulty occurs. Those living without problems tend not to comment on the internet about how their lock just works everytime. Some do, but they are just odd.

The fact that those who have interacted with their customer service seem to have only positive stories says a lot.
