We all know that Sold Secure is crap anyway because they don't test the locks using the same 'tools' as the criminals commonly use BUT,

most insurance policies insist that the lock you use is Sold Secure to a certain level (Bronze, Silver or Gold) depending on the value of the bike.

Kryptonite M18 locks (New York M18 and the Mini fahgettaboudit) are not Sold Secure rated, even thought they are top-of-the-range and cost £80-£100. The popular Evolution Mini has now been withdrawn too!

This is because Kryptonite have to pay Sold Secure to get these locks rated and put on the list annually, and for whatever reason have chosen not to.

The crazy thing is that if you use these 'strong' locks your policy will be invalid so you'd need to change to 'weaker' Sold Secure rated locks and therefore increasing the risk of the bike being stolen - insane!

NOTE: some insurance companies will assess ANY lock and potentially endorse the policy accordingly (but this must be done when you take out the policy - not after the bike has been stolen or damaged)
