Hi all, hope your well,
So excitedly I get on my new (2nd hand) Defy 4, lovely and smooth I though, slight issue with the gears but think that'll just need tweaking, however after about 10 miles there is a knocking noise coming from the left side of the crank, clonk, clonk, clonk seems that it's making the noise more when I'm pushing hard on the left peddle, very disappointed and worrying as I've not got a lot of £'s to sort the problem, any idea's please ?
TIA Craig.

Play in the bottom bracket perhaps? Can you move the crank up and down or side to side ever so slightly with your hand? If so bearings are probably worn, and bottom bracket may need replacing.

Thanks all, will see if there's any play when I get home from work, was told bike had only been on rollers never on road, disappointed as I asked him if there were any issues, suppose it's too be expected

I had a similar thing on my Secteur recently it turned out that the bottom bracket needed nipping up a tiny bit and that fixed it.

Makes little odds really. Whether it's been on rollers or the road, there's still been miles put on those components. I shouldn't get too annoyed about it though - replacing the bottom bracket isn't a particularly difficult job. Maybe he just never noticed it. And it may turn out to be something completely different yet.

Mile 195 you were spot on, equally as embarrassing as spelling pedals peddle like I did in my original post, the knocking was actually coming from said pedal and not the crank / bottom bracket, so happy as they were only we'll go cage style peddles ;) (still can't believe I did that) so I'm on the look out for some new pedals ;)
Oh gears still need tweaking tho

Barnet,
It could be that the BB just needs taking out, the threads cleaned and slightly greased, and re-fitted. If they have never been done before, it could be all it is.

Sorry for the late post, all's well that ends well then.

Many times I have tried to adjust my gear cable tension because of a slight clicking noise when pedalling. It usually turns out that the bottom bracket needs a bit of a clean. Rotating the bearings with my finger will indicate if they are worn (requires memoval of cranks and chainrings). Whether the BB bearings are worn or simply dirty, they make very similar noises to what I would get if the gear cable tension isnt spot on. Caught me out more than enough times.
