I've been having trouble with the back of my knee, been cycling while fairly sore for a couple of months now but it's getting to that point were I'm going to have to seek medical advice. Seems a fairly strange injury to me as it'll be sore enough but I can go out on the bike for say 25 mile and it'll be fine but get very sore again after 2 days. I've been diong a fair bit of internet research and cant seem to pinpoint what this is, any ideas what type of injury that is?

I'm delaying going to the Doctor as I fear it may be an Operation job and I might be looking at getting some medical Insurance in the meantime

Does this apply?

Posterior knee pain. Pain behind the knee is far less common, and much more straightforward. It’s almost always due to over-extending the knee.

  • Bike-specific problems to look for: a saddle that’s too high or too far back, although these are just as likely to cause pain further up the hamstrings.
Persistent pain behind the knee should be looked at medically to exclude a Baker’s Cyst.Named after the chap originally describing them and nothing to do with making bread, they’re a harmless bulging of synovial fluid into the space behind the knee. Your doctor can discuss treatment options with you.

Could be any injury from a long list of position related injuries, to overdoing it, to genetics. Get it looked at and don't go wild on the bike whilst it hurts

Saddle too far back could be a likely cause, I recently bought a Secteur Elite triple and the riding position compared to my old hybrid is totally different and I do feel like I'm stretching a lot. I did have this trouble with the previous bike, thou it's far worse now. i bought the Secteur because of back trouble, this would be a bit of a sickener if it is the case

Hi bennydorano !

Please don't mess about wasting your time searching for an internet answer to your problem, half of the information you will read is written by people who like to call themselves 'experts' but in reality may have browsed through a book or two, and have probably got their information from other places on the 'net !!

I'm a physio and specialise in cycling related injuries, but I wouldn't try to diagnose and offer you treatment advice without a complete physical exam and observation of your posture, position on the bike etc.

My best advice to you is this :

1. if you're new to cycling make sure your bike is set up correctly for you . . . visit a GOOD bike shop with the facilities and knowledge to be able to fit the bike to you properly.

2. consult a sports physio and get checked out properly.

The trouble is with trying to self diagnose - you could be missing something simple and far more important which might not be evidently linked with your symptoms, i.e. a problem manifesting at the knee joint may originate from the foot/ankle/ hip/ lower back etc.

If you treat your symptoms incorrectly you could end up with more serious long term problems - get it sorted professionally !!

Hope this helps

Visited a Sports physio (and a Doctor in attendance) today, he scanned the knee and reckoned it's Bursitis (inflammation/fluid on the knee). Thought this was great news as i feared the worst. Hopefully 3 X power ice bath sessions will shift it or drained with a needle if that doesn't work. Riding position and overdoing it.
