Hi everyone,

I'm new on here, and a fairly recent convert to road cycling. I also ride a horse, and occasionally a mountain bike, and thanks to a skiing accident a couple of years ago, I'm now missing a posteria cruciate ligament in my knee. Normal rides are anything between 20 and 50 miles, and my knee doesn't really like it!

I have a huge and cumbersome PCL replacement brace for skiing, but I can't cycle in it because it is too big and hits the bike frame. Most of the supports I can find online look as though they would pinch when cycling, as you bend your knee so much.

So I'm after advice - do any of you ride in a knee brace? And if so, what do you recommend?

Thanks, R.

I would talk to a physio, the wrong type could do more harm than good  good ones are also pretty expensive

Fellow skier here - sorry to hear about your PCL. While you need to make sure you're doing the right thing to support your knee, remember that cycling puts far less pressure on the joint than skiing, so with luck you should be able to pedal without a huge brace. Do you use anything at all at present, like a neoprene support? If you are cycling without any support at all then it would be worth looking for something good-quality and off-the-shelf.

Have a look at using KT Tape - supports the knee, but allows full range of movement on the bike,

My surgeon & physio have recently suggested this as an alternative to a heavy duty knee brace. I've tried it a couple of times with good results.
May not suit your particular application though - but may be worth a try.

I've been cycling in a Donjoy Reaction which has been fine, but after a few months the plastic web has started breaking, and at nearly £70 a go I was hoping to find something that lasts a bit longer.

Without ant support my knee hurts on the bike - the skiing accident ruptured ACL, PCL and MCL, so two ligaments were repaired and one removed. I wear the PCL replacement for skiing and hill walking, and do fine without for everything else except cycling.
