I need a new chain for my Charge Mixer 2010. It uses a KMC X9 chain and there appears to be a choice between a KMC X9 73 and a KMC X9 93. What is the difference?

If I remember correctly one is grey (73) and the other is silver (93). Both look the same after they are covered in gunk, it depends if u keep your chain ultra clean or not.

I also have a Mixer - 2010. Save your dosh and fit an X8 73 / 93 chain.

8 speeds chains are stronger and cheaper than 9 speed. I replaced the stock chain when it wore out with an 8 speed and it works flawlessly.

this a dodgy advice, a 9-speed chain is slightly narrower than an 8-speed version - it might still work but not a good idea!

The Mixer is an 8-speed hub geared bike. The usual advice about chain compatability does not matter here - the OP could run a (even cheaper) single speed chain if he likes.

I run an 8sp chain because one of my other bikes is 3 x 8 derailleur set up, so I just buy a pack of chains that can be used on multiple bikes

so what is the precise thickness of the sprocket used on this set-up?

Not sure. But I know that the chain has to be 3/32" as opposed to the single speed chains (1/8").

Shimano stipulate a 9-speed chain in their tech docs, but I'm on my second 8-speed chain without ill effects.

It was Charge themselves who said I could use any 3/32 chain.

The 73 is made of steel and weighs in at 296g while the 93 is titanium and is 276g. Personally I prefer the steel version
