Is there anything in the Manchester/Lancashire area for kids MTB/cyclocross racing or fun events I've tried googling it all I come up with is Manchester triathlon.....he's 8 so I think that is out of the question.
Thanks

I can heartily recommend cyclocross. My 8 year old loves it, it's cheap and easy to get into.

Take a look here. Should be something nearby. The U10 races cater to all ages and abilities, typically last around 10 minutes, and are great fun to spectate as well.

Edit: Oops just read that again - obviously U10 races cater for all ages as long as they are less than 10

There are kids triathlon races of appropriate length, so don't totally discount tri... (My club runs a children's aquathon, which is swim to run and might not be appreciated by a cyclist!! )

This is great info from VamP, there's a cyclocross race at Hyde (about 3-4 miles from my home) in the next 2 weeks. I had been wondering about some racing for my 8 yr old son and couldn't find anything suitable when I searched for MTB racing but cyclocross on his MTB would be perfect.

Yeah, it's a great way to get them started.

Just don't let him go to it thinking he's going to be winning straight away, the best U10s are blisteringly fast.

No problem. I don't think he/we will have any illusions about the chances of immediate success. It is simply to have some fun with other children and test himself against the terrain as much as anything else. If he finishes the course he will be a big winner

Ah you're lucky. Mine went to his first adamant he was going to win. But the crushing blow of coming 3rd from end didn't stop him loving every second

Had a great morning at the Cyclocross race today.

Oldest son is 8 and younger lad was also allowed to race even though he is only 5 and was the youngest/smallest competitior.

Here's is the youngest son in the line up of under 8's

And here is my older son doing his best to look calm and cool lining up with his age group.

The event was split into 3 heats. First was a timed lap then a pursuit race and finally the mass start by age group. 8yr old did great in his pusuit race and was just starting to reel in his target when the 10 minute time ran out and got a 4th place in his mass start race so was over the moon with his results. Our younger son was unlucky and drew a rider from the U10 group as his counterpart in the pursuit and was caught just a minute before the end and just didn't have the enthusiasm left for the final mass start race but was dissapointed when he realised his mass start race was just his age group setting off for only 2 laps so would have probably done the race had we known the full format beforehand.

We all had a great day, result was very proud mum and dad and 2 boys who had a super time. Definitely on the look out for similar events.

New outdoor track at Ashton Under Lyne. Greater Manchester. All ages welcome. Not been myself though it looks fantastic.

I believe they have race meeetings / competitions ?

I prefer sports city with the children
