Evening all , i am looking into buying a bike for our 4 year old daughter and dont fancy any of the princess , pink , tassled , white wheels etc etc and am looking for an ordinary bike. Sadly there are some lovely ones but they are about £150 !!

WE have seen one which look quite retro cool and is red and green and really could be from father christmas , the only consideration on this is that it has a fixed wheel., I remember when i was a kid i had pedal back brakes but a fixed wheel is different. It doesnt strike me as a good idea when you are going down hill as the only brake on the bike i am looking at is at the front :

Is this a good idea or am i missing something ??

cheers

Downhill on a fixed wheel is more challenging. Is there any way to change it to a freewheel? Maybe it has a 'flip-flop' hub that will take a freewheel on the other side. Also, is it possible to add a rear brake too - useful for either set-up.

where are you?

I've got a bashed and enjoyed but still running SS my big 6 year old son grew out of a few years ago, and the one he grew out of last year, both resting in the garden looking for homes

they both have flames on mind

new bikes for kids that age don't last a year in my experience

Unless you get an Islabike, you're bound to paintwork which is attractive to children. Some are less glaring than others-

we just bought a "super T" for £49.99 from decathlon for my 3 year old boy ( tall like his dad) not garish paintwork, a nice blue colour.

I haven't seen a fixed gear bike for a 4 year old. Do you know the make/model if it? I'm just curious.

My lad learnt to ride on a fixed gear bike! It was one with ten inch wheels and solid tyres. The stabilisers came off just before his third birthday and off he went. Next bike was a pedal back rear brake and the next was a single speed with proper brakes. It took him only a ride or two to adjust to the new bike/brakes.

You can most likely fit a freewheel, you could check on this.

You can also add a back brake as long as the frame is drilled for one.
